I have never before been a fan of wall safes hidden behind paintings. Nearly every person has them and not all make an effort to keep it a secret! I find that they serve more as status symbols than they do effective places to hide valuable items.
We all have seen films that show these types of safes. Because everybody knows the likely hiding spots for them within a house, thieves would also know the best places to try to look for them.
Diversion safes are low cost and much better at hiding valuable items as compared to expensive wall safes. These are secure containers which could store money or jewelry and are disguised to appear precisely like items seen in the house.
They go unnoticed simply because they appear like cans of a car degreaser, 7up soda, fruit cocktail and similar. The only moment you can tell that each is not what it appears is the moment you already know what it is.
Given the appropriate hiding spot, however, thieves won’t ever take the time to search through these disguised safes mainly because they look so common. This is precisely what makes them much more effective as compared to costly wall safes. Nobody will ever believe that they hold anything of value.
You can place diversion safes inside a cupboard, fridge or pantry. You can also store them out in the open to look like part of your home décor.
In my own house, I have several disguised safes everywhere. I keep emergency money, savings and other cash inside them. I keep jewelry in them, as well.
Even though I keep my hiding safes out in the open, I have peace of mind mainly because nobody can see past their disguises. Nobody will find where I keep my stash of valuable items, not even my own family who comes to visit me frequently.
Discreet diversion safes hidden throughout your house are better than one big, costly safe placed behind a painting. It might be out of sight however, if the hiding spot is well known, thieves know precisely where to look for your prized possessions.
